A face-to-face community is one, in which, students and teachers meet face-to-face in a classroom setting and learning takes place only in the classroom. In an online classroom, students and teachers meet online and learning takes place at any time of day. In an online classroom, learning is convenient. A face-to-face community offers rigid schedules that learners have to work around. In an online classroom, digital learning offers flexibility so learners can work on their own time and at their own pace. A face-to-face community limits discussions to the time allotted for one particular class period. In an online classroom, the online environment gives participants the opportunity to engage in ongoing discussions and extend the conversation.
A face-to-face community resorts to textbooks and paper when completing projects. In an online classroom, the online environment provides opportunities to incorporate new technologies and promote creativity. A face-to-face community only allows for teachers to talk to their students face to face. In an online classroom, online teaching opens the doors to communicate by text, audio and/or video formats. Face-to-face communities have a set time and schedule meaning communication is limited to that set time frame. Communicating with online learners can take place at anytime because there is not a set class time frame. Face-to-face community teachers often find themselves calling on the same students during class discussions. In an online class all students have a voice and the ability to share their thoughts, opinions and ideas with everyone in the class. Face-to-face community classrooms allow students to access technology when it is convenient for the teacher. Online classrooms immerse students in technology.
Face-to-face communities tend to use technology to drive home a teacher directed point. Online classrooms use technology in ways that allow students to take control of their own learning. Face-to-face communities restrict students use of technology by only allowing them to use teacher selected programs and sites. Online classrooms offer students the freedom to gain and display newfound knowledge in new ways.
Personally, I have been part of a face-to-face community and an online community. In the face-to-face community, I felt like I got to know my classmates as people instead of profiles. But in the face-to-face community, I felt like I couldn’t ask questions when I wanted to. In the online community, I took charge of my own learning. I could learn anytime of day and it was very flexible. When I took my first online course, here at GCSU, I was little nervous. I have never taken an online course. Once I got started, I feel in love with online learning! In the online course, I saw several evident characteristics:
1. We called each other by our first names.
2. We used emoticons to communicate.
3. We were able to freely express ourselves.
4. We were able to ask a lot of questions.
5. We had fun and used a lot of humor.
I believe that online classes are going to be the wave of the future!
