Assessment 3

Online communities and face-to-face communities have elements in common, but also differ in many ways.
Online and face-to-face communities have many elements that are similar.  In both types of communities trust is needed.  When online, trust is necessary because people are trying to develop a connection with someone that they may not know.  People want to feel comfortable and feel that they can express themselves, but if they do not trust the people in the community in which they are interacting, they will be less likely to voice their opinion.  In a face-to-face community trust is also necessary.  When talking with people face-to-face people want to feel comfortable and have a connection.  They want to feel they can also voice opinions comfortably.  Along with trust in both communities people want to feel as if they belong and are supported.  No matter if online or face-to-face people do not want to feel uncomfortable.  People want to enter a location and feel that they are valued and have a purpose.  Support is needed in any type of situation as well.  When supported, ideas are shared and relationships are developed.  It is important no matter what type of community that trust is developed, people feel comfortable, have a sense of belonging and feel supported.
Online communities and face-to-face communities while similar in ways can also be different.  In an online community people must first develop a personality.  They must work to join a group and introduce themselves so that others can become familiar.  In a face-to-face community developing a connection with others comes more naturally.  Connections are made through group interactions and discussions in which people can hear another’s voice and view their expressions.  There is more of a chance to lose connections and inclusion of people in an online community.  In an online community people are also able to respond to questions or discussions with deeper thought.  People are able to view a question and think through their answer without a quick response.  For some people this may be a benefit so that their online voice is not misunderstood.
I have had the opportunity to experience an online community.  In this community I did feel that I belonged.  I felt that I had a voice and was able to state my opinion without negative feedback.  I have been in online communities and seen where that was not possible.  People would voice their opinions about a subject matter, but others that did not agree would respond negatively.  When viewing this interaction it made me feel as if my own opinion would not be appreciated.  I have also been a part of an online community in which I was supported and felt that I belonged.  I appreciate, when online having positive feedback from others.  When taking online courses especially having feedback is like getting a smile.  I have also had to develop my online personality.  While this is not always easy, I am finding it easier to interact and feel comfortable the more I use online communication.  I find myself thinking more clearly and trying to develop a voice others can understand.
In both types of communities, online and face-to-face, there are elements that are similar and elements that are different.  I find that face-to-face interactions are still easier for me, but as I learn and develop my online voice I am becoming more comfortable and confident in my online communities as well.

Comments: This student did a great job comparing and contrasting the elements in each type of community. The student included both questions in the essay as well. A very organized well written paper.
