Assessment 5

According to the Encarta Dictionary, “community” means a group of people with a common background or with shared interests within society.  When using that dictionary definition, one would find very little difference with a face-to-face community and an online community.  The difference, I guess, comes with the actions of those within the community.
When one is involved in a face-to-face community, the student tends to receive constant monitoring and less self-motivation is required.  The relationship between teacher –student and student-student is easier to build and depending upon the personality of those involved is easier to tear down. The relationship between the students and teachers is the responsibility of the teacher or online facilitator.  It is imperative that the relationship is built- that a community is formed-  in order for learning to take place.  Our facilitator in this course, first encouraged us all to post a picture and write about ourselves.
Often times, students in a classroom are present in body but not in mind. It is hard to gauge participation during a lecture type scenario.  But in a virtual classroom, it is very easy to tell when a student is not on-task or involved in the lesson.  As spoken of earlier, the maturity or learning style of the student is important to the success of a virtual class.  The student must be self-motivated, have the necessary time and equipment, and have the personality to be involved with the community.  I feel as a student myself that I have grown as an online student. I’m better able to express myself and learn from other’s experiences.

Comments: This student had brought up a very good point about an online community and face-to-face community. I also thought the examples he or she had about a virtual classroom were great.
